Overview

The state of California is home to over 115,000 neighbors sleeping on our streets and under our bridges with over 41,000 of our neighbors being located in Los Angeles. Street medicine addresses the unique needs of the unsheltered homeless by delivering care directly to them in their own environment. Formally known as the LA Street Medicine Symposium, we have expanded our net to be inclusive of the state of homelessness in the state of California. The California Street Medicine Symposium still stands as one of only two street medicine focused conferences available in the US making this a unique opportunity to connect, learn and innovate together. This event provides an opportunity for street medicine teams, people with lived expertise in homelessness, community members, health plans, community organizations, government representatives and academic medicine to come together in a common space to discuss the current state of street medicine in California, street medicine best practices, and where street medicine should go next. This two-day conference will be highlighted by two internationally recognized experts in homelessness as our keynote speakers, innovative lectures from speakers throughout the state of California, and an interactive problem-solving workshops to promote new ideas and new partnerships.

Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the complexities of health care delivery, policy and access for people experiencing homelessness.
  2. Identify new, innovative ways to advocate for the unhoused population through networking, storytelling and policy change.
  3. Discern how to apply evidence-based medicine to the street environment.
