Purpose Statement

The Breast Imaging landscape is rapidly changing. The debate over breast cancer screening continues to evolve, requiring updates as to current practices. Additionally, technical advances such as digital breast tomosynthesis, whole breast ultrasound and “fast” or abbreviated breast MRI demand renewed examination, as new data supports their incorporation into previously conventional protocols. Penn Radiology Breast Imaging: State of the Art analyzes the current controversies and presents the best practices for today’s breast imager. The activity is also designed to meet MQSA CME requirements.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

1. Explain the roles and potential benefits of digital breast tomosynthesis and synthetic 2D imaging in the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer and benign breast diseases

2. Discuss the data on the use of breast MRI and ultrasound in the supplemental screening of high and intermediate risk women as well as women with dense breasts

3. Discuss the emerging technologies of contrast enhanced digital mammography and abbreviated breast MRI

4. Describe new breast ultrasound techniques and applications

5. Explain the changes in the new BI-RADS 5th edition for breast imaging
