Overview:
On behalf of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia (SPA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), I am delighted and honored to welcome you to the SPA-AAP Pediatric Anesthesiology 2023 Meeting. Our meeting will be held at the JW Marriot in Austin, Texas, from Friday, March 31 – Sunday, April 2, 2023.We look forward to welcoming you to the Lone Star State! Austin is the capital of Texas and is also known as the world’s live music capital, hosting two large music festivals each year – Austin City Limits and South by Southwest (SXSW).
The conference hotel is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Austin. The JW Marriott Austin features an on-site spa, four restaurants, and seven bars. Beyond the hotel, you are a short walk to 6th Street with live music spots, bars, and restaurants, and 2nd Street with great shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. Also, a short drive away, you could visit the Bob Bullock State Museum, Blanton Museum of Art, Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library and Museum, or the State Capitol. The weather in Austin around March/April is typically 70 – 80 degrees F.
We have selected the theme, “Ready to Serve – Educating and Empowering,” for Pediatric Anesthesiology 2023 as a call to action toward our mission! The mission of SPA is to advance the safety and quality of anesthesia care, perioperative care, and pain management in children by educating clinicians, supporting research, and fostering collaboration among clinicians, patient families, and professional organizations worldwide. And the mission of AAP is to attain optimal physical, mental, and social health and well-being for infants, children, adolescents, and young adults.
The Society for Pediatric Pain Medicine (SPPM) will hold its 10th Annual Meeting, and the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Society (CCAS) will present its 2023 Annual Meeting on March 30. The program chairs for each program, Dr. Sophie Pestieau (SPPM) and Dr. David Vener (CCAS), have created outstanding program content for you to enjoy. Meeting details can be found at sppmmmg.org (SPPM) and ccasmmg.org (CCAS). Thank you to Dr. Vener and Dr. Pestieau for your dedication and collaboration! The SPA-AAP meeting will hold a few workshops on March 30 as well.
On Friday morning, we will begin the day with Breakfast with Exhibitors. This year, for the first time, we will have a table set aside at this breakfast for First-time attendees! Please plan to join this table, if this will be your first SPA meeting, for a chance to learn some pearls on how to optimize your meeting experience and meet with SPA leadership. After breakfast, we begin our meeting in the world’s music capital in the most fitting way – with a musical presentation. We will then proceed with the first session of the day titled “Hearing, Music, and Healing,” featuring Dr. Lynn Ngai Gerber, a team of music therapists (Marial Biard, Maribeth Brinkley, and Hillary Gomez), Dr. Carol Liu (otolaryngology), and a special guest – Ms. Gonzalez discussing the patient perspective.
Following the opening session and a coffee break, the next session is titled “Challenges in the Pediatric Operating Room” with Dr. Jamie Sinton and Dr. Monica Hoagland. Then the AAP Advocacy Lecture by Dr. Katherine Hoops on Firearm Injury, Prevention, and Policy: What Clinicians Need to Know. Following a discussion, the AAP Robert M. Smith Award will be presented. This award has been given, since 1986, to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to pediatric anesthesiology.
After lunch on Friday, we will return for a session on the “Art and Science of Anesthesiology.” In this session, we will hear from Dr. Chao, Dr. Kilbaugh, and our SPA Distinguished International Scholar, Dr. Zipporah Gathuya from Nairobi, Kenya.
