Overview

Over the last two years, our consortium of established biomedical scientists and experts have been sharing expertise and knowledge which culminated in the Cancer Genomic Research and Training Conference held in 2019. These educational interactions and conferences have been highly successful in highlighting an introduction to the knowledge and resources necessary for investigation of the cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms and pathways involved in the initiation, progression and treatment of cancer. The following strategies were proposed for a cancer-focused educational program that would create the integrated culture in research and clinical management needed for early detection and reduction of the burden of cancer:

  • Broadly, support for educational and training opportunities in basic and translational cancer research to health care professionals, researchers and students.
  • Initially, organize modular short courses in cancer genomics to support degree programs in basic understanding of biology of cancer and the role of infectious diseases and cancer. To achieve this, adjunct professors from MSK/POETIC and Weill Cornell Medicine will join Ghanaian experts in teaching.
  • Build critical mass of researchers and practitioners in Ghana partners that will advocate for cancer curricula in medical training.

This year, we present Systemic Effects of Cancer: From Genome to Epigenome – A Course in Cancer Genomics.  The course will run for 9 weeks with 12 sessions in the series beginning March 2, 2022. Schedule and topics can be found below.
