Overview

This full-day multidisciplinary activity on the topic of Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension (SIH), secondary to spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak, brings together clinicians and researchers to share the latest advances in the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of this under-diagnosed, disabling but treatable secondary headache disorder. While the course is designed for clinicians and researchers, patients and caregivers are welcome to attend either in-person or via live-streaming. Invited speakers include representatives from a range of subspecialties, including anesthesiology, neurology, neurosurgery, and neuroradiology.. The topics will cover the variety of clinical presentations, differential diagnoses, complications, cranial and spinal imaging, percutaneous interventions and surgical approaches. The anatomy and pathophysiology of the various leak types will be discussed, along with tailored imaging and treatment approaches. There will be an interactive discussion about gaps in evidence, research priorities, and potential opportunities for collaborative research. Join your colleagues in learning about important developments in the field and share your insights about priorities for the future.

Objectives

  1. Recognize the range of clinical presentations of spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH).
  2. Describe the diagnostic criteria for spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH).
  3. Discuss cranial imaging findings in spontaneous intracranial hypotension.
  4. Describe the different types of spinal CSF leaks.
  5. List current spinal imaging techniques used to localize spinal CSF leaks, recognizing that repeated imaging may be necessary and that optimal imaging technique varies with type of leak.
  6. Outline an approach to patients with suspected SIH.
  7. Describe medical management of SIH headache during and after treatment.
  8. Describe current percutaneous treatments in SIH, including non-directed and directed epidural patching techniques.
  9. List surgical approaches for different types of spinal CSF leaks.
  10. Discuss the possible causes of persistent or relapsing post-treatment symptoms when imaging is negative.
  11. Participate in discussion about SIH research priorities.
