Target Audience

Practicing academic and community pathologists, and pathologists-in-training

Course Description

This course focuses on recurrent challenges encountered by pathologists in the evaluation of breast lesions and emphasize a practical approach on how to resolve them and the diagnostic interpretation of a variety of breast lesions. Each case discussion will address pitfalls and problems that may arise in the interpretation, the importance of radiologic-pathologic correlation and practical considerations regarding patient management.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners will be able to:

  • Review the diagnostic criteria, differential diagnosis, and management implications of various challenging entities in breast pathology, including spindle cell proliferations, vascular lesions, small glandular proliferations, sclerosing lesions, and spectrum of low-grade neoplasia
  • Discuss the diagnostic features of inflammatory and reactive lesions of the breast, emphasize the importance of clinical and radiologic correlation, and appropriate clinical management for these lesions
  • Review the histologic features of the spectrum of mucinous lesions, and special histologic subtypes of invasive breast cancers, discuss differential diagnostic considerations, and the clinical significance of the classifications
  • Develop a practical approach for the diagnostic evaluation of breast core needle biopsies, recognize histologic features essential in distinguishing diagnostic challenging lesions from their mimickers
  • Learn about the applications of diagnostic, prognostic and predictive IHC markers in breast pathology, with emphasis on the interpretation, reporting and possible pitfalls
