Overview

Systemic anticancer therapies (cytotoxic chemotherapies, targeted therapies, immunotherapies) have resulted in remarkable improvements in patient survival. Despite this remarkable success, the majority of patients will develop toxicities of various organ systems, which may impact overall health and activities of daily living, resulting in inconsistent antineoplastic therapy, all of which may affect clinical outcome. Therefore, prevention and management of untoward events is critical for the maintenance of quality of life and the optimization of anticancer therapies.

2020 Symposium Highlights

  • Therapy-related adverse events will affect the majority of cancer patients, resulting in increased cost, inconsistent dosing, and decreased quality of life.
  • With increased survival and patients living longer on therapy, adverse events affecting quality of life and clinical outcome command attention.
  • Lectures focused on immune-related adverse events will describe the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management strategies for the oncology healthcare provider.
  • Up-to-date information will be presented on adverse event mechanisms and management from specialists in the most commonly affected organ systems.
  • Practical strategies to identify patients at high risk will be highlighted, with strategies to direct patients towards the most efficient therapies based on healthcare providers.
  • New strategies to monitor and manage symptoms of patients on active anticancer treatment will be discussed including patient-reported outcomes and teleoncology visits.

The target audience for this symposium includes MDs, PAs, NPs, RNs, Pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals treating cancer patients and their associated symptoms.

This course is endorsed by the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer.

Objectives

  1. Recognize the clinical presentation and impact on quality of life of treatment-related adverse events
  2. Understand mechanisms to identify and triage patients at high risk for the development of toxicities
  3. Discuss procedures and clinical strategies to prevent and treat adverse events in patients with cancer
