Overview

Aging is a risk factor for the development of cancer. As the United States population ages, the need for clinicians skilled in the care of older adults with cancer will increase. Research, however, suggests that common geriatric syndromes and many psychosocial needs of older adult oncology patients are often unintentionally overlooked or under-addressed. This evidence based program is designed to optimize the care of older adult oncology patients by advancing the knowledge and expertise of advanced practice providers.

Assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of common geriatric syndromes and disease processes that can impact older adults prior to, during, and after cancer treatment will be discussed. A general overview of key geriatric oncology topics will be provided, including physiologic changes associated with advanced age and risk factors associated with cancer-directed therapies, the use of the comprehensive geriatric assessment as a method for risk stratification and interventions prior to cancer-directed therapies, and recognition of atypical presentation of disease when developing a differential diagnosis. Additionally, cognitive impairment, cancer screening guidelines, chemotherapy toxicity tools, common cancer-related treatment side effects, and polypharmacy will be addressed. Participants will also be engaged in important topics such as Inclusivity and providing care to LGBTQ+ older adults, transitional care management, and understanding Medicare guidelines and community resources aimed at keeping older adults as independent as possible.
