COURSE DESCRIPTION

USC presents the second year of the USC Diabetes Symposium. This hybrid program, offered in person and over virtual platform, presents updates in the field of diabetes and obesity management with the use of cutting-edge medications, procedures and behavioral techniques. Highlighted are areas of advancement including medical and minimally invasive procedural management of obesity, updated recommendations for patients with type 2 diabetes, with personalized strategies for each patient, care for patients with diabetes in resource-limited settings, and guidance on evidence-based recommendations for nutrition and use of nonnutritive sweeteners. Presentations from experts in the fields of diabetes, obesity, nutrition, occupational therapy and advanced endoscopy will help inform clinical practice in the management of these complex diseases with a rapidly evolving base of evidence.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Recognize unique patient characteristics to create personalized treatment strategies for patients with type 2 diabetes.

• Identify patients who would be ideal candidates for incretin-based therapy for diabetes and obesity.

• Discuss risks and benefits of different treatment options for diabetes.

• Utilize resources to provide care for patients in resource-limited settings.

• Implement lifestyle management techniques that have proven benefit in patients with diabetes.

• Provide evidence-based nutrition recommendations for patients with diabetes.

• Counsel patients on the risks and benefits of artificial sweeteners.

• Educate patients on the connection between obesity and type 2 diabetes.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This course is intended for primary care providers, nurses, trainees and other health care professionals that care for those with diabetes and obesity to select individualized treatments for these complex patients.
