Overview

This accredited nursing conference is designated to address practical issues and clinical challenges that oncology nurses face each day. During this two-day conference, attendees will benefit from an intimate learning environment in which prominent faculty will present the latest in oncology care and provide practical strategies and tools to improve nursing practice and patient outcomes.

Objectives

At the end of this event, the audience will be able to:

  1. Recognize the healing power of laughter to prevent stress, burnout and build resilience in the oncology nursing profession. Identify the long-term positive health effects including improved quality of life by integrating humor and laughter as a complementary therapy in oncology care.
  2. Summarize the diagnosis and treatment of colon, pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancers. Describe how clinical research trials determine the treatment of GI Cancers, leading to better outcomes and survival
  3. Describe the expected Physical changes in the body during the stages of the dying process and discuss how to manage them. . Examine the societal, cultural, and health care system biases that contribute to a negative perception of death and dying.
  4. Identify new drugs/agents that have been FDA approved for cancer treatment in 2024. Recognize how new drugs/agents are given generic names, and how to gain information based on the naming system.
  5. Describe the treatment options for pancreatic cancer including outcomes. Explain the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive surgical techniques for treatment of pancreas.
  6. Describe the current standard of care treatment for glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Summarize the importance of the tumor microenvironment indication in the treatment of brain cancer and identify the more common brain tumors, including non-malignant tumors and their treatment.
  7. Understand the indications, methods of treatment, and outcomes of stereotactic radiosurgery including the Gamma Knife and Linac based radiation systems and modern surgical approaches to the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme and brain metastases. Describe alternative adjuncts of surgery such as radiofrequency ablation, and brachytherapy with gamma radiation implants and chemotherapy wafers.
  8. Explain what’s new in the ONS Safe Handling Guidelines 4th edition. Describe how the enforcement of USP 800 will impact Oncology Nursing. List 3 strategies to protect yourself from hazardous drugs.
  9. Describe the risk of hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) and cytokine release syndrome (CRS) for specific classes of chemotherapy and biotherapy agents, Identify strategies to prevent HSR and CRS and. Recognize signs and symptoms of HSR and CRS and understand the management.
  10. Identify common chemo regimens used in both the inpatient and outpatient settings that require appropriate sequencing of administration. Summarize the importance of premedication, hydration, or lab requirements when administering chemotherapy. Demonstrate the calculations involved in determining the AUC dose and corrected calcium value. Discuss rational used when selecting a chemotherapy plan. Prioritize when and how to collaborate with pharmacy when patient-specific information is needed to proceed with treatment.
  11. List state and federal laws that affect nursing practice and describe the four elements needed to justify a malpractice claim. Explain where to find the standard of care for RN practice and specify actions that may affect a nursing license.
  12. Identify three factors that medical nutritional therapy improves and two ways a Registered Dietitian manages cancer patients. List 3 (Global) recommendations to prevent cancer and discuss and identify common misconceptions about supplements and “nutritional myths”.
  13. Describe an overview of cancer pain management including goals and limitations. Discuss the current landscape in US Cancer Pain Management Review and how cancer centers can employ ways to ensure an effective pain management program. Summarize the recent regulatory and oversight changes in the cancer pain arena.
  14. Examine the role of Pastoral/Spiritual Care in caring for and supporting the oncology patient, family, and nurse through the cancer trajectory. Discuss how spiritual care includes different faiths, belief systems and cultural traditions during illness. Differentiate the roles of a nurse and a chaplain in the spiritual care of our patients.
  15. State the skills to engage in open conversations about death and dying, fostering understanding and communication during challenging times.
